SLMC majors develop strong critical thinking, case writing and development, verbal and nonverbal communication, problem solving, research design and implementation. The Department of Strategy, Legal Communications and Management aims to prepare students for careers in advertising focused on developing persuasive messages to sell products, services or ideas. Students will be equipped with persuasive and informative methods to enhance the creation and development of messages in a variety of communication contexts, including digital media. The SLMC department was created by combining award-winning programs from Howard University`s two departments of journalism and radio, television and film, and film with the Department of Communications and Culture. The PR program was ranked by PR Week magazine as one of the top five programs in the United States. The advertising program has produced more African Americans in advertising than any other university in the world. The university`s first Marshall Scholar and the first Fulbright Scholar from the School of Communications were students in the Organizational Communication program. The Legal Communications program offers the Richard Parsons Scholarship.

Cox Media offers scholarships to students interested in media management and distribution. Focuses on management and leadership issues in media companies. Starting in August 2013, students in the Department of Strategy, Legal Communication and Management will acquire a Bachelor of Arts degree with a focus on Strategic Communication (Advertising and Public Relations), Legal Communication (Privilege and Policy), Management Communication (Media Management and Organizational Communication), or Interdisciplinary Studies (Building a Major Subject). The Department of Strategy, Legal Communication and Management aims to prepare students for careers and advanced studies in communication designed for strategic purposes such as public relations and special event planning, advertising and sales, non-profit and for-profit management, law and policy, organizational training and development, corporate communications, government relations, entrepreneurship, human resources, marketing communications and media management. SLMC majors develop strong critical thinking, case writing and development, verbal and nonverbal communication, problem solving, research design and implementation.
