Sls Legal Scholars

The Society of Legal Scholars (SLS) is the learned society for those who teach law at a university or similar institution or who are otherwise involved in law. At the beginning of 2017, SLS had nearly 3000 members, mainly academic lawyers from the UK and Ireland. The SLS (formerly The Society of Public Teachers of Law) was founded in 1908 and has non-profit status. It is the oldest and largest learned society in the field of law. The Society is the most important representation for lawyers in the UK, as well as one of the largest learned societies in the arts, humanities and social sciences. It is common to divide the world of knowledge into the natural sciences and the humanities and social sciences. Law plays a central role in this regard and shares concerns in historical, literary and philosophical research as well as in politics, economics and the social sciences. The study of law is one of the branches of study that are essentially interpretive in nature. It is a question of interpreting the legal order of States, of the European Community as a transnational body and of the international community in general. Common law, as it exists in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and the Scottish historical legal tradition are fundamental elements of the cultural heritage of the British Isles. In the Commonwealth and the United States, as well as in civil jurisdictions, the various developments in ancient traditions are no less culturally fundamental. The scientific study of law and the study in social sciences of its functioning are everywhere fundamental to the understanding of modern society. Members of the Supreme Judiciary and the legal professions also regularly participate in the work of the SLS.

Some members have a legal qualification themselves and are related to the practice of law or are active in the practice of law. Members of the Society come from all jurisdictions in the United Kingdom and Ireland and also include some affiliate members who generally work in other common law systems. The Society annually awards the Peter Birks Award for Outstanding Jurisprudence. The prize is awarded to outstanding published books by researchers who are in the first 15 years of their academic career. [4] The Society of Legal Scholars (SLS) is the learned society for those who teach law at a university or similar institution or who are otherwise engaged in law. At the beginning of 2016, the firm had more than 3,000 members, including academic lawyers and practicing lawyers in various fields. [1] It has charitable status. Stanford Law School`s SLSI is a leadership and pipeline program for students from diverse backgrounds that aims to remove barriers that underrepresented minorities, first-generation students, and low-income students in particular might face in accessing legal education. All students are welcome to apply. During this first year of the program, twenty legal researchers will be selected to participate. The company`s online membership form does not currently work. While we resolve this issue, please download a copy of the application form here, complete it and return to treasurer@legalscholars.ac.uk.

Comprehensive legal education must always include a solid foundation in the foundations of legal doctrine: public law, both constitutional and criminal; private law relating to obligations, persons and property and at least certain elements of commercial law; as well as certain elements of the law in its transnational or international context. It should also include elements of legal history and philosophy and sociology of law, preferably through special courses devoted to this subject. More important than the details of a particular program is the spirit of a legal education, defined by: rigor and accuracy in the study and analysis of legal texts; Understanding of texts in light of the underlying principles and possible theoretical approaches to their construction; critical assessment of problematic aspects of the law; and a willingness to ask questions about the contexts in which the law applies. Awareness should also be made of the nature of law as a practical discipline; This also includes an awareness of legal practice and its requirements, but this is not exhausted. In the broadest sense, it requires an understanding of law as a realm of practical reason. For the first time in 108 years, the Society of Legal Scholars (SLS) held its annual conference outside the UK in 2017 on the various units of law.
